Following is a statement by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) today (17 July) on an individual student allegedly using AI tools to create indecent images:
The University reaffirms its zero-tolerance towards gender discrimination, harassment, or misconduct, and regards complaints of this nature with the utmost seriousness. The health, safety, and wellbeing of our students are our highest priority, and the University is committed to providing a safe, respectful and supportive environment for all members of our University community.
Upon receiving the complaint of alleged misconduct, the University reached out to both the affected female students who lodged the complaint and the male student in question, providing the necessary support to the affected students in various aspects, with consideration for their wellbeing.
Based on the information received at the time, the University conducted an internal investigation, and issued a warning letter to the male student named in the complaint. In addition, the male student made a formal apology to his affected peers. The affected female students were informed of their available options for further action, for their consideration.
The University wishes to clarify that the case has remained open and under ongoing attention since the initial complaint was received. The warning letter issued by the University and the formal apology made by the male student are not a closure to the case. As the male student admitted to the alleged conduct, the University took the case in a serious manner, and implemented these measures as deterrence, ahead of any compulsive investigation.
Additional contact has recently been made with the parties involved, to ensure a thorough and fair process. The University noted that the Equal Opportunities Unit of the University has already been approached. The male student expressed deep remorse for his actions, and has voluntarily withdrawn from a year-long overseas academic exchange programme in the upcoming school year.
The University will co-operate with law enforcement agencies and will continue to further review the case, taking further actions when appropriate.
